Our Oceanographic Data Engineer Amy Thompson spoke at the RICS / Hydrographic Society Annual Hydrographic Survey Lecture. We attended and exhibited at the 25th Coastal Futures Conference on 17th and 18th January 2018. The Conference had an emphasis on looking ahead to the opportunities and practical measures that will be needed to meet the challenges the future will pose. There was over 35 presentations with a range of topics, from renewables in coastal and marine environments to the opportunities and risks from Brexit.

The theme of the event – ‘Is poor data management putting your operations at risk?’ will resonate with many managers and practitioners dealing with geospatial and business data and information.
We showed innovative ways of making life easier for you, your decision makers and stakeholders. The workshop featured demonstrations of how GIS technologies and OceanWise products and services are successfully delivering savings in time, effort and money.
The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to network, share experiences with government and industry experts and practitioners, as well as finding out how GIS and spatial data management delivers real value and benefit! The workshop was aimed at public, commercial and non-governmental organisations involved in managing assets or providing decision support.

OceanWise once again showcased its work for UK ports at the UK Harbour Masters’ Association (UKHMA) Spring Seminar in Scotland, on 29 March 2017.
We exhibited at Oceanology International North America on February 14-16 2017 in San Diego, California.
In co-operation with IMarEST, we ran our One-Day Marine Data Management Awareness Course at IMarEST HQ, 1 Birdcage Walk, London, SW1H 9JJ on Wednesday 8 February 2017. Data is the new oil or the new electricity; it costs money and we collect it for a reason. Because it is such a valuable asset – only an organisation’s employees are more valuable – it needs to be treated accordingly. If you are involved in collecting, managing and / or publishing data, then this course will provide a valuable insight on the world of data.
OceanWise attended the 17th meeting of the Meso-American and Caribbean Hydrographic Commission (MACHC) hosted by the Brazilian Department of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN) in Belem from 14th-17th December.
In addition to the annual review of hydrographic and oceanographic activities in the region, a one day workshop will explore “Marine data management as a prerequisite for regional risk assessment”. OceanWise, as Expert Advisers to the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), spoke about “Why Data Management Really Matters” and how best practise can be achieved. John Pepper, Secretary of the IHO Marine Spatial Data Infrastructures (MSDI) Working Group, updated attendees on the work programme of the group and its impact in the development of national and regional initiatives to improve the exchange, sharing and re-use of hydrographic data.
