Our Sustainability and Environmental Goals

OceanWise > Our Sustainability and Environmental Goals
Our Sustainability and Environmental Goals

Sustainability is defined as the development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainability therefore is an issue for everyone, no matter of the size or scale of a business. In line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals we recognise the interdependence between growth and the environment and believe that without a healthy and sustainable environment we will not be able to drive a healthy economy. We value and respect our environment so therefore have set goals which we hope will support the natural resources on which we all depend.

What we are setting out to achieve:
  • By 2025 we will reduce our carbon footprint:
    • by reducing energy usage, changing to hybrid vehicles, offsetting our carbon from vehicle usage and air travel, using renewable energy wherever possible.
  • Incorporate environmental thinking into all our projects, business plans and actions:
    • by initiating environmental assessments across our project work and throughout marketing activities (such as events and travel).
  • Reduce our consumption of resources and waste:
    • by increasing recycling, reducing the amount of waste that we produce, re-using equipment and instruments where possible, encouraging renewable energy use and storing stationery centrally rather than individually on each desk, encouraging regular maintenance to improve instrument longevity.
What have we done so far?
  • We have separate waste collections for food waste, general waste and dry mixed recycling
  • We have twinned our toilet!
  • Supporting Ports “Preparing for an Extreme Weather World”
  • We have arranged collections at Christmas for the local food bank and local clothes bank
  • We now have a drop off point at the office to donate clothes to the local clothes bank
  • We no longer automatically print new brochures and instead seek alternative digital ways to spread the word
  • We have done two local litter picks and plan a third before the end of the year
  • We try to source second hand office furniture wherever possible and donate any that we cannot use back to be rehomed
  • We have a team ‘free recycling’ channel where we share and re home any unwanted personal items
  • The Lobster Hatchery Christmas campaign 2023
  • Our energy is now supplied from 100% renewable sources
  • £5 donation to Project Seagrass for every feedback received
  • Further increases to our internal recycling policy – we now recycle post bags and toiletries
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments on projects
  • Promoting good housekeeping in the office to reduce energy usage (I.E turning lights / heating off, using correct recycling, implemented remote sockets)
  • Implemented a plan for creating our own internal carbon footprint calculator which will then be used on all projects
  • Conducted annual environmental audits
  • Purchasing high quality eco-friendly re-manufactured printer cartridges from suppliers who offer and provide environmentally sustainable practices
Corporate Social Responsibility

We believe in the bigger picture and every year we aim to support one or two local clubs or teams with a financial contribution. Usually this contribution go towards kit or provisions for teams. Over the past five years we are proud to have supported:

  • Ignite Junior & U23 Cycling Team
  • Alton Rugby Football Club – Boys Under 12’s
  • Alton Football Club – Womens and Girls Team
  • Solent Pirates Youth Cycling Club
  • Hawley Lake Sail Training Centre

If you have a local club or sporting teams that needs some help then please get in touch with our Marketing team.

Previous Initiatives:
  • Reviewed our energy supplier – increase the amount of electricity from renewable energy sources
  • Initiate an annual local “clean up” (litter picking) day to support our local community
  • Reviewed our office milk supply
  • Regularly servicing equipment to improve longevity of equipment
  • Changed over the first of our company cars to a plug-in hybrid
  • Conducted annual environmental audits
  • OceanWise and the Great British beach clean
  • Purchasing high quality eco-friendly re-manufactured printer cartridges from suppliers who offer and provide environmentally sustainable practices

We have also worked with Harwich Haven Authority in implementing an Environmental Monitoring System and we also work with various Ports on Air Quality.
